SCIENCE MUSEUM OKLAHOMA WINTER CAMPS OFFER ‘COOL’ FUN IN DECEMBER

November 20, 2023

Reindeers, the ice age, chemical reactions and tinkering are on deck for Science Museum Oklahoma’s hands-on winter camps set for Dec. 21-22 and 28-29.

“These camps bring all of the museum’s resources into the hands of children with age-appropriate activities and special themes,” said Annie Bewley, assistant director of education at SMO. “We’ll have hands-on fun experiments, unique demonstrations and, of course, all of our immersive exhibits and a state-of-the-art planetarium.”

The museum’s camps are for children in pre-K to sixth grade and feature a different theme for each age group and camp date. Camps are limited to 16 children per age group and fill up quickly.

“Camps at SMO allow us one of our most rewarding ways to achieve our mission of revealing the wonder and relevance of science. We believe these camps can ignite a spark of curiosity that will lead to an adventure of lifelong learning. Plus they make great holiday experience gifts!” said Bewley.

Camp themes, times and dates are:

  • Early Explorers, pre-K and kindergarten with a minimum age of 4-yrs old, 9 a.m. to noon, $50 for members, $60 for nonmembers:
    • Glow Snow, Dec. 21-22 – An “icy” and colorful experience will be had by all with ice painting, creating instant snow and snowflake watercolor experiments.
    • Penguins & Polar Bears, Dec. 28-29 – Have you ever pondered why this pair doesn’t need to pack a parka to play in the snow powder? Let’s peer into the possibilities of penguins and polar bears.
  • Explorers, grades 1-3, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., $100 for members, $110 for nonmembers:
    • Reindeer Games, Dec. 21-22 – Compete in special holiday minute-to-win-it games and mind challenges.  Earn points and win fabulous prizes.
    • The Ice Age, Dec. 28-29 – Explore the science fiction and science fact about cold dwelling mythical creatures, extinct animals and wildlife that are still around today. How are they the same, how are they different, and how did they survive?
  • Innovators, grades 4-6 with a maximum age of 12-yrs old, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., $100 for members, $110 for nonmembers:
    • Resins Greetings, Dec. 21-22 – It’s time to freeze things in time forever with the chemically cool science of epoxy resin art. Explore creating chemical reactions and take your masterpiece home.
    • Take THAT (apart), Dec. 28-29 – Two full days of taking tech apart…Computers? A bread machine? A smashing good time will be had.

Advance registration is required. Registration will close for the Dec. 18-19 classes on Dec. 14 or when full. Registrations close for the Dec. 28-29 camps on Dec. 21.
